A MAN was treated for smoke-related injuries and around 30 other people were evacuated after a fire broke out in a block of self-catering apartments.

Crews from the Â鶹·¬ºÅ Fire Service were called to the scene at Belvedere Hill in St Saviour at 10.45pm yesterday after a resident awoke to a fire and heavy smoke in his room.

The fire service said the man had managed to escape after throwing a fire blanket over the flames and was later treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

With the smoke spreading quickly around the building, occupants of other units in the block were evacuated and moved to accommodation in a “nearby” hotel – understood to be the Merton, which is immediately adjacent to the site,

The Fire Service said four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had entered the property to deal with the fire.

An investigation is now underway.
